Elijah

The Choir of Hendon St Mary’s performs one of the most thrilling choral masterpieces of the 19th century. Elijah, by Felix Mendelssohn, uses a succession of amazingly dramatic choruses and beautiful solos to tell the story of Elijah, the Old Testament prophet - and one of the few biblical figures to be recognised by the three great world faiths of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
Mendelssohn wrote it for English choirs, and it was an instant hit. It relates how Eilijah turned the people away from false gods, summoned a huge rainstorm to end a drought, stood up to the evil queen Jezebel, and eventually was swept up to heaven in a fiery chariot.
The performance at St Mary’s,  will be with full orchestral backing and use more than 70 performers.
